TAG!: Teaching with Acoustical Guidance

Posted on December 15, 2019 by Adrian McCune

There is a lot of research (and a lot of controversies) about TAG Teaching. TAG teaching uses a bell, click, ding or other acoustical sounds to teach ballet dancers, yogis, football players, surgeons, teachers, and students wanted behaviors. The research is fascinating and the applications seem to be unlimited.

To give you a background into TAG Teaching’s origins, it came about with Skinner and his infamous pigeons. To be completely honest, it is best known as a way to train animals. TAG Teaching goes by an alternate name: clicker training.

And thus brings us into controversy. Should you use a method that is most widely associated with training your pet to teach your child wanted behaviors? What if your child has intense maladaptive behaviors and you heard about a research-based intervention with promising results?

TAG Teaching is science-based and with most science-based interventions it comes with the question: just because we can do something does that mean we should?
