This past month Disney+ came out. When I was done binging, I realized it has some great content that you can use for Social Skills! Read on for some free lessons (well, free after a Disney+ subscription).
Boy Meets World/Girl Meets World – These two series about Cory growing up – and then Cory’s daughter growing up – cover everything from peer pressure to friendship, dating to sex. Almost any of the episodes can be turned into Social Skills lessons and they all have a central lesson the episode is based around.
A Bug’s Life – This movie is great for discussing bullying and the power of teamwork. The ants do not realize how strong they are until they band together.
Forky Asks a Question – This mini-series of shorts where Forky from Toy Story 4 asks questions such as What is time? What is Friendship? What is Love? is great for starting discussions of more complex concepts. Students can take sides and debate.
The Lion King – I use this to teach perspectives. Each character has their own perspective on the story. Mapping them out and discussing motives helps students understand how their perspective of a situation can affect their behavior/actions.
Inside Out – google “inside out social skills lessons’ and you will get a whole slew of results. My class usually watches this after finishing Zones of Regulation. The students analyze the video and write down all the different Zones Riley was in. The scene where Riley’s imaginary friend gives himself up to save Joy is a great discussion starter for why people do things for others even when it may hurt themselves.
What’s your favorite Disney+ content to connect to a Social Skills Lesson?
